The South Bend Symphony Orchestra and retiring Music Director Tsung Yeh will celebrate the start of a new year with the Masterworks Series concert on Saturday, February 6 at 8 p.m. at the Morris Performing Arts Center.

The evening will open with Johannes Brahms’ popular Hungarian DanceNo. 6 and continue with his Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by world renowned pianist Haochen Zhang

Second half of the concert will feature two of Ottorino Respighi’s most famous works - Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome, The title work of this program, Pines of Rome, is a symphonic poem, penned by Italian composer in 1924. The piece serves as Respighi’s ode to Rome, with each of the four movements depicting the pine trees of the ancient republic at different points of the day, ranging from the crack of dawn to the eeriness of night. Respighi’s poem has been performed at concert halls across the world, including the storied Carnegie Hall, and is cited as a major source of inspiration for composer John Williams, best known for his award-winning compositions for the Star Wars sagathe Harry Potter series and Jaws.

Acclaimed piano virtuoso Haochen Zhang, who began his award-winning career at the age of 5, will be featured as the soloist with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. Zhang, a 25-year old native of Shanghai, China, became the youngest competitor to receive the prestigious Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. He was the first Chinese citizen to participate in the famed music competition.
